Fonts & Font Formats

Fonts are typefaces that appear on screen and in printed documents. When they’re properly installed, they appear on all Font menus and in font lists.

Mac OS X supports several types of fonts:

  • Data fork suitcase format (.dfont) stores all information in the data fork of the file, including resources used by Mac OS drawing routines.

  • Microsoft Windows font formats are Windows format font files. These include TrueType fonts (.ttf), TrueType collections (.ttc), and OpenType fonts (.otf).

  • PostScript fonts in Mac OS or Windows format are used primarily for printing. These fonts must be accompanied by corresponding bitmapped font files.

  • Mac OS 9.x and earlier font formats include Mac OS TrueType fonts and bitmapped fonts.
