Working with PC Files

Documents created on a DOS- or Windows-compatible computer aren't the same as those created on a Mac OS-compatible computer. Some differences include:

  • Disk formats vary based on the operating system that formatted the disk.

  • Document formats vary based on characters and special codes recognized or required by each operating system.

  • Document formats also vary based on application codes and formats.

Mac OS 9.1 comes with File Exchange, a software tool that helps you work with PC files by performing three functions:

  • Reads PC-formatted disks on your Mac OS computer.

  • Maps DOS and Windows extensions to Mac OS applications.
