Automatically Indexing Volumes

As discussed earlier in this chapter, to search for files by content, you must index the volume you want to search. The amount of time it takes to index a volume varies depending on how many files are on the volume and how fast your computer is. For example, my 266 MHz iMac can index its 2,700 items in less than 10 minutes, while my 300 MHz G3 takes about an hour to index its 24,000 items.

In most cases, when you want to perform a search, you don't want to wait any longer than necessary. For this reason, you may want to set up Sherlock to automatically index volumes regularly, based on a schedule you set up.
