Tip 404Use AirDrop Even on Incompatible Macs

AirDrop allows you to share files between compatible Macs (see Exploring OS X: AirDrop), but by altering a hidden setting, some computers that Apple states are incompatible can also join the AirDrop network (although all the computers must be running OS X Lion or Mountain Lion).

However, unlike regular AirDrop networking—which lets users share files even if they’re connected to different Wi-Fi networks—AirDrop enabled this way works only if the Macs to which you want to send or receive files are part of the same network. However, unlike with regular AirDrop, this network can be either wired (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi.
