Tip 400See the Condition of Your Battery at a Glance

This is a tip for anybody with one of the MacBook series of computers.

If you hold down Option and click the battery life display at the top right of the screen, you’ll be told the condition of your battery. On most Macs this reads Normal, which means the battery is in good condition. If instead you see Replace Soon, Replace Now, or Service Battery, there’s likely a fault with the battery, and you should take your computer for repair as soon as possible. However, before you do that, consider resetting the System Management Controller, as described in Tip 184, Reset Hardware Settings.
