As its name suggests, TextEdit started life as a simple text-editing application. However, it has grown into a fully fledged word processor to the extent where it’s good enough for light to moderate use. Type and Spell-Check Foreign Languages

This is less of a tip and more of an observation, although it’s worth knowing. If you start typing in a non-English language, TextEdit will automatically switch its spell-check dictionary to that language.
