Tip 300Quit Finder

You can quit all applications except one: Finder. Finder is designed to always be running, and with good reason—it’s responsible for displaying files on the desktop. Quit Finder, and all the desktop icons will disappear. However, there are certain instances when it’s useful to quit Finder. Some of the tips in this book require you to restart Finder, for example, although we use the killall Finder command, which is a quick and dirty way of doing so within a Terminal window.

Adding a Quit Option

To add a Quit option to the File menu of Finder’s application menu, all you need to do is enter the following line within a Terminal window (open Finder, select the Applications list, and then double-click Terminal in the Utilities folder): ...
