Approximately every few months, Apple updates OS X with a point release. This is usually several hundred megabytes in size, and if you have more than one Mac in the house, downloading the updates for each computer can put significant strain on your Internet connection.

The command-line softwareupdate tool can help. This gives much more control over the updating procedure compared to using the Mac App Store for updates, and it allows you to download the update packages before manually installing them. This way, you can download the updates and transfer them to other computers using a USB memory stick.
