Tip 248Turn Off Mail Sounds

Mail is a surprisingly noisy program—you’ll hear a noise when mail is sent (a swoosh) and also a noise when new mail arrives.

Turning off sound effects is very easy. Open Mail’s Preferences dialog box (application menuPreferences), and then ensure the General tab is selected. In the New Messages Sound drop-down list, select None. Then remove the check alongside Play Sounds For Other Mail Actions. Finally, close the Mail Preferences dialog box.

To restore Mail sound effects, repeat the previous steps but in reverse—choose the New Message Sound entry from the New Messages Sound drop-down list, and then put a check in the Play Sounds For Other Mail Actions checkbox.
