Tip 83Create a “Drives” Stack

Here’s a neat little trick that will add a new stack to the Dock that, when clicked, will display any storage attached to your computer (things like USB memory sticks, FireWire/Thunderbolt drives, and SD cards). As an added bonus, it will also show any installation .dmg files you currently have mounted.

Setting Up the Stack

Here are the steps needed to add the stack to the Dock:

  1. Follow the instructions under the “Viewing Hidden Files” section of Tip 156, Hide Files, specifically for using the secret command that shows hidden files within Finder. This will let you view the entire filesystem hierarchy, which is necessary for the following steps.
