The lessons learned from early M2M deployments have clearly identified the need to develop a set of operational common practices in order to facilitate the required growth of the M2M market.

In addition, the common capabilities that apply to all major M2M market segments are presently being developed in standards bodies and forums across the globe. The development of these common capabilities should gradually reduce operational deployment timescales, as well as making the cost structures more attractive to potential early adopters. It is important for the market to evolve by considering the lessons learned during the initial deployments of M2M services and for it to actively contribute to the development of a standard and reusable framework for M2M systems. This will ensure the interoperability of devices and services and an M2M solution that can be applied globally.

M2M Communications: A Systems Approach, the first book in the series, examines the subject of M2M using a service-requirements- and system-driven approach. It is intended to provide the reader with an overview of the main issues that should be considered when developing services destined for the M2M market. These issues include network optimization, service architecture, APIs, security and smart cards, M2M devices and modules, and IP protocol suite evolutions, but the list is not exhaustive. These ...
