SON for Core Networks

8.1 Introduction

Self-Organising Network principles are feasible also for automation of Core Networks management. Core Networks-related 3GPP standardised SON use cases and functionalities are related to Evolved Packet System (EPS). Some of the EPS related use cases are such that they span over radio and core networks and require functionality from both networks. An example is the ANR function that is based on detection of new neighbours based on UE reports in the base stations. However, in order to create actual X2 links between base stations, EPS support is needed to discover IP addresses of new neighbours. In addition, SON functionality that is not based on standard signalling or interfaces can be identified.

As for any SON, it can be concluded that SON use cases for core networks are not limited to LTE networks only, but many of them can be already taken into use in 2G/3G networks.

8.2 SON for Packet Core Networks

8.2.1 Packet Core Element Auto-Configuration

Auto-configuration is particularly useful for configuration of Enhanced Packet Core. In LTE networks tens of thousands of connections between eNodeBs and MMEs may occur. In addition, configuration of those connections may change frequently. Thus, their manual configuration would be very laborious and auto-configuration therefore particularly beneficial.
