Cognitive Radio Networks: Sensing, Access, Security

16.1 Introduction

Cognitive Radio is a topic which has attracted lots of interest from researchers recently; it is a promising technology that could play a strong role in the future communication systems, for example, next generation cellular systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), Wireless Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). The aim of this chapter is to briefly describe the concept of cognitive radio, what are cognitive radio networks and their types. Phenomenon and types of spectrum sensing, access mechanisms in cognitive radio networks, need and design of common control channel is also described before the chapter looks into the security of cognitive radio networks and a framework to realize cognitive radio networks security. The chapter concludes by describing several applications of the cognitive radio networks.

16.2 Cognitive Radio: A Definition

A cognitive radio is a radio that understands the context in which it finds itself and as a result can tailor the communication process in line with that understanding [1].
