14.1 Introduction

High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) made data services go wireless in a massive way. The mobile networks mainly carried voice traffic before HSPA was launched while now HSPA traffic is more than ten times voice traffic in many markets. The fast growth in data usage and the new smartphone applications set higher requirements also for HSPA radio. A large number of smartphones with HSPA radio are expected to hit the market pushing the need for further HSPA evolution. This chapter presents the main features and the benefits in HSPA evolution. The features are divided into the following sections: multicarrier, multiantenna and multicell evolution, packet data enhancements, voice evolution, advanced receivers, flat architecture and LTE interworking. WCDMA and HSPA evolution is presented in more detail in [1].
