10.6 Summary

The first set of SON features was included into 3GPP Release 8. The target of SON is to improve the network performance, to minimize the operating expenses, to improve the network resource usage and to help minimizing the impact of cell outage. The first SON algorithms focused on self-configuration while the further 3GPP releases included more features on self-optimization and self-healing. Release 9 brought mobility optimization and energy savings while Release 10 included capacity and coverage optimization and minimization of drive testing. Minimization of drive testing takes benefit of commercial UEs to provide feedback to optimize the network – minimizing the need for costly drive testing. Further 3GPP work focuses especially on inter-RAT optimization between LTE and HSPA and on SON features for LTE-Advanced radio evolution.
