5.7 Conclusions

In this chapter, we have covered the LTE uplink carrier aggregation principles as defined in 3GPP Release 10 specifications. The use of uplink carrier aggregation allows having higher uplink peak rates compared to Release 8 and reaching 100 Mbps in the uplink with single uplink transmit antenna and without having to use 64QAM modulation. Together with Release 10 uplink carrier aggregation there are extensions also for the single carrier uplink operation as the resource allocation in the uplink is now more flexible. The Release 10 specifications enable simultaneous use of two PUSCH allocations or alternative simultaneous PUSCH and PUCCH allocation with non-contiguous uplink resource allocation. The uplink carrier aggregation support is completed in Release 11 with the support of multiple uplink timing advance values to ensure operation with band specific repeater scenarios.
