Chapter 36. Mail and News (Topic 2.206)

This chapter covers the running and administration of mail and news services. The four LPI Exam Objectives are as follows. We deliberately cover them in this chapter out of order, because Sendmail configuration must be understood before some of the others.

Objective 2: Using Sendmail

Candidates should be able to manage a Sendmail configuration, including email aliases, mail quotas, and virtual mail domains. This Objective includes configuring internal mail relays and monitoring SMTP servers. Key files, terms, and utilities include /etc/aliases, sendmail.cw, virtusertable, and genericstable. Weight: 4.

Objective 3: Managing Mail Traffic

Candidates should be able to implement client mail management software to filter, sort, and monitor incoming user mail. This objective includes using software such as Procmail on both server and client side. Weight: 3.

Objective 1: Configuring Mailing Lists

Install and maintain mailing lists using Majordomo. Monitor Majordomo problems by viewing Majordomo logs. Weight: 1.

Objective 4: Serving News

Candidates should be able to install and configure news servers using INN. This Objective includes customizing and monitoring served newsgroups. Weight: 1.
