Chapter 30. System Maintenance (Topic 2.211)
This Topic is a small part of the 201 exams, but it's key for all system administrators. It represents an advance in sophistication over several topics in the Level 1 exams:
In Exam 102, you learned to configure system logs for your server. For Exam 201, you are expected to implement these custom system logs on a central logging server for your network.
In Exam 101, you prepared to use package management for either RPM or Debian systems. Exam 201 requires you to build your own system packages for either RPM or Debian systems.
The Level 1 Exams also discussed methods for creating your system backups. This 201 Topic expects you to implement backup storage plans for mission-critical data.
This Topic contains three Objectives:
- Objective 1: System Logging
The candidate should be able to configure syslogd to act as a central network log server. This Objective also includes configuring syslogd to send log output to a central log server, logging remote connections, and using grep and other text utilities to automate log analysis. Weight: 1.
- Objective 2: Packaging Software
The candidate should be able to build a package. This objective includes building (or rebuilding) both RPM- and deb-packaged software. Weight: 1.
- Objective 3: Backup Operations
The candidate should be able to create an off-site backup storage plan. Weight: 2.
