Chapter 25. Linux Kernel

This Topic is dedicated to all things kernel . In Chapter 13 of this book we covered Level 1 kernel topics for Exam 102. On the 201 exam, LPI covers more advanced kernel-related topics, including the various components of a Linux kernel, advanced kernel compiling, patching a kernel, and creating custom kernels.

This Topic on the Linux kernel has four Objectives:

Objective 1: Kernel Components

Candidates should be able to utilize kernel components that are necessary to specific hardware, hardware drivers, and system resources and requirements. This Objective includes implementing different types of kernel images and identifying stable and development kernels and patches, as well as using kernel modules. Weight: 1.

Objective 2: Compiling a Kernel

Candidates should be able to properly compile a kernel to include or disable specific features of the Linux kernel as necessary. This Objective includes compiling and recompiling the Linux kernel as needed, implementing updates and noting changes in a new kernel, creating a system initrd image, and installing new kernels. Weight: 1.

Objective 3: Patching a Kernel

Candidates should be able to properly patch a kernel for various purposes including to implement kernel updates, to implement bug fixes, and to add support for new hardware. This Objective also includes being able to properly remove kernel patches from existing production kernels. Weight: 2.

Objective 4: Customizing a Kernel

Candidates should be able to customize ...
