Glossary

ASA  (1) American Standards Association (now the ANSI). (2) Method of rating the speed of film. Replaced by International Standard Organisation (ISO) or Exposure Index (El).

Best boy  The assistant chief electrician, the gaffer’s chief assistant.

Black wrap  Black anodised aluminium foil. Used to control spill light or shaping a light beam.

Brightness  Term often incorrectly used to mean luminaire. Brightness is a subjective effect, it is how bright we see an object.

Butterfly  Large frame to hold nets, silks or blacks (6 ft ×  6 ft, 12 ft ×  12 ft, 20 ft ×  20 ft).

Chroma  Another name for saturation, control usually found on monitors.
