Fibre Channel Data Transfer

Data is transferred across a fibre channel network in frames. Each frame has a 20-byte header and a trailer that contains a CRC code used to check whether the frame has been corrupted during transmission. The maximum size of a frame payload is 2112 bytes.

8B/10B Encoding and Ordered Sets

The encoding used for fibre channel already has made its appearance in this book. The IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet working group adopted the fibre channel 8B/10B encoding for 1000BASE-LX, 1000BASE-SX, and 1000BASE-CX. This encoding is described in Appendix A, "Physical-Layer Encodings for Ethernet, Fibre Channel, FDDI, and Token Ring."
