Emulated LAN Environments
An emulated LAN (ELAN) is made up of computers, routers, and bridges that have ATM interfaces and are connected to ATM switches. A single ELAN can span several interconnected ATM switches, and the same set of switches can host several ELAN communities. Each ELAN is identified by a unique name.
There is a close relationship between VLANs and ELANs. An ELAN can be part of a larger VLAN that includes ATM systems and conventional LAN systems. In an environment that uses VLANs, an administrator can configure the ELAN to be part of a particular VLAN.
