Chapter 20. ATM Overview
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a technology that was designed to upgrade the world's public wide area telecommunications networks to a new, higher-speed architecture.
The primary ATM standards body is the Telecommunications Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T). The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the European Telecommunications Institute (ETSI) contributed to the ATM effort.
The ATM Forum, whose members are equipment vendors and service providers, published interoperability agreements that made it possible to build practical products. The Forum made ATM work by solving the technical problems that arise in real-world use.
