Dedicated Token Ring

The development of Dedicated Token Ring (DTR) accomplished three important goals:

  • It introduced full-duplex operation to Token Rings.

  • It enabled vendors to offer standards-based Token Ring switches.

  • It set the stage for 100Mbps Token Ring.

Switching and full-duplex operation greatly increased the backbone capacity of Token Ring LANs. DTR enabled multiple stations and classic Token Rings to be attached to a switch, and allowed traffic to flow freely between them. Switches could be connected to stations and to one another by full-duplex links.
