Translational Bridges
One aspect of the move toward building bigger LANs and using fewer routers is that some users are bridging Ethernet, Token Ring, and FDDI LANs to each other. This is being done in spite of some major incompatibilities between these LANs, including differences in the following:
Frame sizes
Frame format
The bit order of the bytes in the frames
The MAC addresses that are used for LAN multicasts
Transparent and source-routing bridging
No standard defines exactly how translational bridging should be done, although some standards offer partial solutions that work in particular situations. These partial solutions are augmented by as many proprietary solutions as there are vendors.
