  • Every network interface card (NIC) is assigned a unique 6-byte MAC address.

  • Universally unique media access control (MAC) addresses are controlled by the IEEE, which assigns 3-byte organizationally unique identifiers (OUIs) to requesting organizations. An OUI value is used as the first3 bytes of a unique address.

  • Some LAN administrators prefer to assign their own local MAC addresses to NICs.
