Appendix C. Standards Bodies and References

Adherence to standards is very important in the local area network arena. It is rare to find a workplace computer that is not attached to a network, and users take it for granted that computers, networked peripherals, hubs, switches, and routers will interwork without a hitch.

Vendors support standards while retaining their right to innovate. Successful innovations usually find their way into the standards at a brisk pace.

In several areas, standards are driven by vendor associations. Some of these vendor groups are sources of free technology information that can be accessed via the Internet.
