Summary

Samba can take on many duties that are helpful or even necessary on Windows networks but that don’t relate to sharing files or printers directly. Most of these duties are related to handling NT domain controller functions, and, in fact, functioning as a domain controller is one of these key functions. Related functions include handling NetBIOS name resolution as an NBNS system and becoming the local master browser or domain master browser. Using Linux as the operating system for any of these functions can help improve your network’s overall reliability because of its excellent overall stability.
