Step 3: Create Folders to Share

After you’ve created the groups, you can create the folders to share. For security reasons, it’s not a good idea to create folders under an existing user’s home folder. Instead, you should create folders separate from the normal directory structure on the system.

1.
Log in as the root user. This is one of the times where it is easier to just log in as the root user. Anytime you log in as root, you must use extreme caution that you don’t alter anything you shouldn’t be altering.
2.
Double-click the Computer desktop icon, and then double-click the Filesystem icon. This starts Nautilus, showing the root directory structure of the Linux system.
3.
Right-click on an empty space in the Nautilus window and select Create Folder. When Fedora creates the new folder, it gives you the option to name it. Change the name to accounting.
4.
Create another folder, called sales, in the root directory.
5.
Right-click on the accounting folder and select Properties from the drop-down menu. The accounting Properties window displays the settings for the folder.
6.
Click the Permissions tab. The Permissions tab displays the permissions for the owner of the folder, the assigned group the folder belongs to, and access for all other users on the system. This is shown in Figure 21-2.
