Ol’ Fashion File Transfers

While BitTorrent is the wave of the future, there are still plenty of Internet sites that require you to download files by using the old File Transfer Protocol (FTP) method. You will often find file repositories for applications, utilities, and other neat stuff on FTP sites. Fedora includes a command line ftp client (simply called ftp), but doesn’t include an FTP client by default, but you can easily add one.

The gFTP program is a popular FTP client for the Linux environment. You can use the standard techniques discussed in Chapter 16 to download and install the gFTP package. After it’s installed, you can go exploring:

1.	Click ApplicationsInternetgFTP. The main gFTP window appears, as shown in Figure 10-16. By default, gFTP points to your home directory as the local directory (shown in the left-side list box). Figure 10-16. The gFTP main window. [View full size image]
