Chapter 6. LOGGING

A log message is an asynchronous report of an event of interest. This chapter discusses logging in general and then looks in some detail at syslog, the default logging system on Linux. We also describe how to control logging thresholds while a daemon is running.

We've organized this chapter into the following sections:

  • Do You Need Logging?

  • Architecture of a Logging System

  • syslog

  • On-Demand Logging
