Web Services

IBM, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard have initiatives surrounding the concept of Web Services. See their Web sites for more information and sample code. There currently isn't a universal definition of a Web service. Let us describe some examples and characteristics to help us recognize a Web service when we see it.

Sometimes, a Web service is defined as any exposed executable residing on the Internet. This would include most CGI applications or even the Web server itself. If we further assert that a Web service doesn't present a user interface, than perhaps even a database management system (DBMS) fits the descrip tion.
