Proxy Servers

Elsolutions will use a Squid proxy running on a Linux host to connect internal users to the Internet. The caching and firewall rules will promote performance and protection.

Proxy servers usually sit between the browser and the Web server, except that many Web servers may be configured to carry out a caching proxy function. The proxy may inspect all traffic going in either direction. The proxy understands higher level protocols such as FTP and HTTP, unlike a packet filter that filters IP ports. The proxy carries out three functions:

  • Filtering and firewalling in both directions.

  • Acceleration through caching and page reuse.

  • Sharing a single Internet connection among clients.
