Interoperability

Dial-up connections promote rich interoperability among arbitrary Windows and Linux hosts. PPP is the protocol of choice for dial-up connections between Linux and Windows systems. More advanced and secure protocols are available, but they are not yet included in Linux distributions. This leaves PPP as the standard and CHAP as the most advanced authentication scheme that works on Windows and Linux. VPNs can be set up using the GPL software available from the Internet.
