Summary

We have examined some of the backup tools included with Windows and Linux. In general, both ntbackup and dump perform their tasks of system backup or simple file backup. With Windows 2000, the issue is somewhat more complicated for two reasons:

  • Windows locks a number of files, which cannot be copied while locked. To get around this, Windows has special APIs for requesting the contents of the file directly from the service that has it locked. ntbackup knows about and uses the APIs, whereas other less customized programs, such as Cygwin's tar and cpio, do not. The result is that neither can completely back up the files in a system partition.
