Samba Interoperability with Windows

Elsolutions will employee a number of Windows XP desktop machines. Linux servers will supply departmental print services. When a Windows XP client wishes to use a Samba printer destination, it requests a connection and then it negotiates a protocol between the client and server. The default authentication scheme between Samba and Windows used to use a clear text password. The password was actually encoded in base 64, but that format is easily decoded. Windows NT service pack 4 changed the default to an encrypted password—a better, more secure default. This broke interoperation with Samba, which didn't use an encrypted password at the time.
