Attaching a Networked Red Hat Linux 7.1 Printer to Windows XP

Most departmental print services at Elsolutions will be served from Linux servers. Many Elsolutions desktop machines will boot Windows XP Professional all or part of the time. There are two main choices for connecting a Linux print queue to a Windows client: Samba or remote lpd.

Samba will be the method of choice at Elsolutions because Windows XP clients natively use SMB and UNC naming to access shares on the network. The main downside is that Red Hat Linux 7.1 must have a Samba daemon configured and running. The configuration file for Samba is located at /etc/smb.conf.
