How Fast Are They?

Now that we have seen so many possibilities, how do they all perform? While writing this chapter, we had to configure a new machine with a Linux kernel. Linux kernels come in a compressed tar file and are unpacked using the tar command, and for compressed tar files, the z option of the tar command. How long does it take to unpack the 35,261,122-byte source file for the Linux kernel? To answer that, we will drag the file into various file systems and time the extraction.

We do not think the measurements presented here are in any sense authoritative. They at best represent out-of-the-box performance for a simple setup. All three file systems can and should be tuned. Nevertheless, we wanted to see if there was much of a difference ...
