Windows CIFS File Sharing

File sharing on Windows is based on the security model of the computer that is sharing the files. If the host is not a member of a domain, then security is based on the local users and groups defined in the registry. If the host is a member of a domain or is a domain controller, users and groups are defined in the Active Directory. In either case, connecting to a shared file system requires knowledge of a name and password. Windows has three authentication models.
