NIS Domains

NIS is a mechanism for distributing databases among many computers. Basically, you give NIS a list of files and NIS makes sure the computers that are on its list get copies in a timely fashion. NIS is a master-slave model. Files are updated on the master and copied out to the slaves. There are tools for changing passwords, changing shells, and changing an obscure field called the GECOS that is field in the password entry. There is no tool for adding a user on any system other than the Master NIS server.
