This chapter presents the mechanics of installing Windows. We will go into desktop systems and standalone servers and go though the domain promotion process. We will describe Microsoft domains only far enough to get a domain created. Further discussion of the Microsoft domain occurs in Chapter 11, “Enterprise Domain Design.” We also discuss disconnecting from a domain and demoting a domain controller (sometimes called a DC) and when such actions are needed.
