Lightroom evolved out of Camera Raw as a raw processor and image management program. Early versions had a basic Spot Removal tool that could be used to carry out simple image retouching, but the performance was somewhat restrictive. To carry out any kind of serious editing, it was always necessary to export to Photoshop. These days, however, you can do more things exclusively in Lightroom. The current Spot Removal tool is noticeably faster and can be used to create brush spots as well as circle spots.
