Basic Primer in Signal Monitoring

Reading a waveform monitor is largely a matter of experience; it’s something you get used to as you do it. Video engineers use WFMs to measure a number of aspects of the signal, including frequency response, subcarrier phase, and so on. For now, however, I am mainly concerned with basic monitoring of the signal to make sure that exposure and color values are within legal limits.

You can have two dedicated monitors: one a waveform monitor (WFM) and the other a vectorscope. However, many models incorporate both functions in a single combined unit.
