Information Literacy and Assessment

Introduction

Immense strides have been made since the 1980s in library instruction and more recently in the assessment and development of tools to measure its effectiveness. The landmark event was the establishment of the “Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education,” approved by the Board of Directors of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) in 2000 at the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association in San Antonio, Texas. It was the first step in defining learning outcomes for information literacy (IL).
