Chapter 10

Sustainability

Leaders come and go; organizations—if led correctly—endure for generations. In this chapter we will discuss how to sustain good leadership. Specifically, we will focus on the following concepts:

  • Getting to the top of the mountain is only the beginning!
  • Individual leadership only gets you so far.
  • There is a need for a culture of leadership.
  • As a leader, job one is creating other leaders.

In every field of endeavor from business to sports, there are surprise teams who pop up every now and then to win a championship, only to fall back to the pack the following year. Then there are teams who consistently exhibit the qualities that it takes to compete at the highest level on a consistent basis. Getting to the pinnacle takes a lot of time and energy. Staying there, however, is the true test of exceptional leadership. It is not very common for a Super Bowl winning team to repeat this accomplishment. However that is the goal of great leadership.
