Influencing Others

Very few people have enough power to ram their agenda through. Even the president of the United States, arguably the most powerful person in the world, has to motivate both houses of Congress to support his legislative initiatives. If you look at every organization, there are people who hold titles and people who actually hold the power. While there is a certain level of power that comes with a title, respect does not necessarily come with the title. People have deference for the office, but they have respect for individuals. The people who really get things done in any organization are able to lead due to their influence.

There are many reasons leaders may have influence in an organization. Perhaps they are viewed as a subject matter expert in an area that is valued by the people around them. Perhaps they have a proven track record of execution that makes their words carry more weight. Maybe they carry themselves in such a way, generating such goodwill, that a request from them will certainly garner support. Whatever the reason, it is imperative for leaders to understand the power of influence and learn to develop the characteristics that create this influence.
