No Man (or Woman) Is an Island

The American credo places a high emphasis on being independent and forging one's own way in the world. We are regaled with stories of our forefathers who were pioneers who set out with a small wagon train and settled the West. Although this style of American tale is romantic and energizing, it is not the stuff that modern-day successes are made of! I have had the pleasure to work in the sports and entertainment industry for the past nine years. Our sport, tennis, can be viewed as one of the most individual of all sports. After all, the combatants stand before the crowds alone, seemingly with nothing to support them but a tightly strung racquet! However, if you look a little closer, even in this most individual of sports, success requires the support of a team. World-class tennis players usually have a team composed of trainers, nutritionists, coaches, racquet stringers, and other subject matter experts. A player's popularity also depends to a large degree on his or her relationship with the media and the fans. Even the most gifted champion will have limited opportunities off the court in terms of endorsements or sponsorships if he or she isn't considered fan friendly.
