Lieutenant Raleigh and Doctor Homansky stood facing the damaged Surgical Assistant (SA). The term “assistant” would have been humorous on any other day, as the robot was fully capable of handling hundreds of surgical procedures on its own—no human surgeon required. If the SA were operational, Kristie would have had it placed in the back of one of the working rovers and driven over to Mars Base Beta immediately. But as with many of the facilities and much of the equipment in Alpha, the power outage had damaged the Surgical Assistant, and the engineering team had not yet been able to find and fix the problem.
