Grumpy’s sensors had no protection against the strong winds. The small lander’s processors were overloaded with sensory input, and the lander could not respond quickly enough to the changing conditions. The last GPS reading before the storm prevented any further calculations put Grumpy at approximately three kilometers from Gamma. Once GPS failed, Grumpy did what it had been programmed to do; drive in as straight a line as possible and use obstacle and rotation sensors to stay on track.
