The animal on the cover of Learning Unix for Mac OS X, Second Edition, is an Alaskan malamute. The Alaskan malamute is one of the oldest Arctic sled dogs. These powerful dogs have muscular bodies, structured for strength and endurance. They have broad heads with bulky muzzles and triangular ears, which stand erect to signify alertness. Their thick coats are coarse and dark on the outside, with soft, woolly undercoats.

Alaskan malamutes make excellent companions, as they are affectionate, friendly, and loyal. They can be playful, but tend to become more reserved as they mature. They are very intelligent, with eyes that reveal their curiosity and interest.
